CCR&R Services for Families

Consumer Education & Referral (CER) Services

CCR&R consumer education and referral services assist families at a critical point in children’s lives, at a time when parents will be entrusting some of their children’s care to an unknown person. For many parents this can be a very emotional, stressful experience. This is particularly true for first time parents. Turning over your child to someone else’s care is difficult. Calling your regional consumer education service will help guide you in finding quality child care that best meets the needs of your child and family. Consumer education and referral services help customers learn about early care and education and school-age child care programs that exist in their communities and become better informed consumers of these programs. Services are free and confidential for all families.

During the call a referral specialist will:

  • Gather family information
  • Assess needs and preferences
  • Explain types of child care available
  • Explain regulatory requirements (Star Rated License)
  • Discuss importance of making program visits and what a parent should observe (quality indicators) or ask during a program visit
  • Discuss the cost of child care and share information that may help pay the cost of care
  • Provide referrals to licensed or license-exempt, legally operating programs
